The second time was a charm for Annika Headington and Brady Sullivan in the shot put. After both Waukon throwers qualified for state in that event last year and fell short of placing, both ended up with medals Thursday morning.
Annika Headington tied her career-best throw, which she set at the district meet at Monticello last Friday, at 40 feet and two inches. The throw was good enough for a fifth place. What’s was the difference between last year and this year? “Technique and the weight room, ” said Headington.
The Northeast Iowa conference represented itself very well in the 2A boys shot put. Noah Fenske won New Hampton’s first ever field event championship with a throw of 60 feet, one-quarter inch. Fenske also won the Drake Relays in that event. Waukon’s Brady Sullivan followed right behind him. Sullivan’s throw of 56 feet and 5 1/2 inches earned him a silver medal. “(Fenske) definitely makes me better, ” said Sullivan. “It’s good having someone there to constantly push you.”
Sullivan and Fenske will compete against one another in the discus tomorrow morning.
