Last year Kee High was its first ever event at the state track meet. This year, the Kee Hawks made history again, winning their first ever running event at state taking gold in the 4 x 800 relay.
The quartet of Makayla Peters, Haley Meyer, Makayla Walleser and Katie Brennan won the event in a time of 10:00.66.
“A couple of senior leaders who refuse to lose,” said Kee High coach Chad Winters when asked what helped them accomplish gold. “You couldn’t ask for better leaders than Katie and Makayla. They set the tone everyday for us. (Makayla Peters) and Haley (Meyer) ran really well. Everything came together for us.”
It was the first ever state medal for Peters, Meyer and Walleser. Brennan was able to collect her sixth state medal.
The Kee Hawks are in a six-way tie for third after day one. “We have a big day tomorrow,” said Winters. “It starts out with the D-Med and we also have a big 4 x 400 preliminary tomorrow. We’re sitting pretty good in both races and hopefully we can continue to perform well.”
Winters also gave a shout-out to the Upper Iowa Conference for the 4 x 800 win. “It was good to see the 4 x 800 title stay in the conference. Elkader Central has won it the last three years and it’s always good to keep such things in your league.”
