The Decorah girls sprint medley relay team took 1.22 seconds off their state qualifying meet time and moved up three places on their seed ending up runner-up in the 3A event to open the day at the state track meet Saturday morning.
The team of Grace Syverson, Brielle Buresh, Rose Gullekson and Brooke Berns finished in a time of 1:49.82 finishing second to Davenport Assumption who ran a 1:46.60.
The Vikings have placed in the sprint medley relay every year at the state meet since 2014.
Brooke Berns anchored the quartet facing Davenport Assumption standout Carly King on the anchor. “I love facing great competition,” said Berns. “When you face great runners and you do better than you think you can it’s great knowing you’re doing it against some of the very best.”
Berns and Gullekson became two-time medal winners in the sprint medley also being a part of a fifth place finish two years ago.
