In one of the closest finishes of the weekend at the State Co-Ed Track, gold finally came to North Fayette Valley.
The Tigerhawk quartet of Gunner Rodgers, Mac Whelan, Adrian Wurtz and Zach Massman won the school’s first ever event at the state track meet winning the sprint medley relay in 1:35.23. Just over a half of second separated the top five teams in the event. Dike-New Hartford was second in 1:35.26. Bellevue came home third in 1:35.57 and Mount Ayr ended up fourth in 1:35.81. All four of those teams were in the final section of the event.
“It’s a rush,” said Gunner Rodgers, who lead off the relay. “I can’t thank these guys enough to leading us to this state championship.”
“It’s just crazy,” said Mac Whelan, who ran on the second leg. “We were seeded fifth and got first. It doesn’t even feel real right now.”
Adrian Wurtz ran on the third leg. “We had tremendous chemistry,” said Wurtz. “I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to run with.”
Zach Massman won a four-way battle on the front stretch on the anchor leg to bring home the title. “It’s our senior year, ” said Massman. “That motivated us a lot. No reason to hold anything back.”
All four members of the North Fayette Valley relay team are seniors.
The event was Massman’s third medal at state, which included a runner-up finish in the sprint medley in 2017. It was the first state medal for Rodgers, Wurtz and Massman.
