Decorah had to replace 16 seniors off a team that finished fourth in Class 3-A at the 2018 State Track Meet. But the standard the program has set for itself continued in 2019.
For the 12th time in the last 14 state meets, the Vikings girls finished in the top 10, ending up tied for ninth. Saturday in Des Moines has usually been their time to shine and this year’s state meet was no exception.
“It was funny,” said co-head coach Brad Johansen. “We were walking in from the parking lot this morning and a lady we did not know said to us, you’re Decorah, you always run well on Saturday. And this year was no exception.”
Brielle Buresh followed with a fifth place finish in the 100 (13.10). Brooke Berns finished third in the 200 (25.81).
The day ended with the 4 x 100 relay. The squad of Buresh, Burns. Rose Gullekson and Grace Syverson ran a 49.48 to finish third.
“It was the third straight school record in that event,” said Johansen. “The originally set the record at district, they broke it in the prelims and broke it again in the finals. That was awesome.”
With the loss of many state meet veterans last year, there was a different approach this state meet according to Johansen. “There was a lot of learning happened this year,” said Johansen. “But we’re all pretty excited about the potential opportunities ahead of us.”
